D & G Catering and Events: A Journey of Faith, Family, and Filipino Flavor in Kitchener-Waterloo From Courage to Calling

A New Beginning in Canada

When she arrived in Canada in the winter of 2007, she carried with her not only a suitcase, but also a quiet courage and a hopeful heart.

Back in the Philippines, she had built a career as a Card Processing Executive at Citibank—but life had something different in store. Encouraged by her grandparents, she embraced the opportunity to start anew in Canada.

What began as a simple “why not?” became one of the most life-changing decisions she would ever make. It wasn’t just about exploring a new environment—it was about growth, family, and purpose.

Being reunited with her grandparents after years apart filled a space in her heart that had long been waiting. Living with them shaped her independence, strengthened her resilience, and grounded her in values that would guide her future.

A Journey of Hard Work and Self-Discovery

Like many newcomers, her early years in Canada were defined by perseverance. She took on multiple jobs—working as a receptionist at a Chinese buffet restaurant, a sales associate at People’s Jewelry, and at a jewelry kiosk in Vaughan Mills—all while helping care for her cousin.

Despite her dedication, she felt a deeper calling—something more stable and meaningful. In 2012, she stepped into the world of financial services as a Financial Advisor with Sun Life.

Her journey continued through respected institutions like Manulife, Specialty Life, CIBC, and RBC Insurance, eventually finding her place in a brokerage where she continues to thrive today. Interestingly, entrepreneurship was not always part of her plan.

In fact, she once didn’t know how to cook or bake. It was only when she became a mother and chose to stay home with her children that she discovered a new passion—one that would eventually transform her life.

From Home Kitchen to Community Favorite

D & G Catering and Events was born during one of the most uncertain times—the global pandemic. When many sources of income came to a halt, she turned to what she had: family, faith, and the love of home-cooked Filipino food.

The true inspiration behind the business is her mother, whose passion for cooking began back home where she and her husband ran a canteen. Guided by her mother’s experience, they started small—selling just two items online: their now best-selling siomai and refreshing gulaman.

What happened next was something they never expected. The community responded with overwhelming support. From those humble beginnings, D & G Catering and Events grew steadily. The menu expanded to include traditional Filipino meals, BBQ, desserts, and party trays—each dish prepared with care, authenticity, and heart.

The journey, however, was not without challenges. There were long nights, early mornings, and moments of doubt. When her parents had to return to the Philippines, she paused the business for two years, choosing to focus on her family and regain her confidence. But sometimes, all it takes is one opportunity.

When a friend asked her to cater a baby’s first birthday, she said yes—despite her fears. With guidance from her mother and faith in herself, she delivered. The event was a success, and that moment reignited everything.

From there, she rebuilt—one order at a time. Loyal customers returned, new ones discovered her food, and D & G Catering and Events continued to flourish.

Growing Through Faith and Resilience

Not every step was perfect, and not every feedback was easy to hear—but she chose to grow through it all.

She listened, improved, and remained committed to her craft. Her story is a powerful reminder that success doesn’t require perfection—it requires persistence, humility, and the courage to keep going.

Above all, her faith has been her foundation. She believes deeply in trusting God’s timing and purpose. In her own words:

“When God is your partner, make your plans big.”

This belief has carried her through uncertainty and continues to guide every decision she makes.

A Message to the Community:

Start Where You Are Her journey is one that resonates deeply within the immigrant experience.

It speaks to the reality that beginnings are often uncertain—but they are never meaningless. She shares this message with the community:

"You don’t need to have everything figured out to begin. What matters is your willingness to try, to learn, and to keep moving forward—even when the path is unclear"

Challenges may shape us, but they can also reveal our purpose. Stay grounded. Stay humble. Keep your faith strong.

Grateful for a Community

D & G Catering and Events would not be what it is today without the unwavering support of the Filipino-Canadian community in Kitchener-Waterloo.

Many of their first customers were fellow Filipinos—kababayans who believed in them, shared their food, and helped their small business grow.

That sense of bayanihan—of lifting each other up—continues to be a source of strength and inspiration. In a place far from home, this community has created something truly special: a space of belonging, encouragement, and shared success.
